John Kumiski has been paddle fishing and tying flies since he was a child and has caught more than 70 different species of fish in 15 states and 10 countries.

His passion is sight fishing with fly and light tackle for any fish that will take a fly or lure. He’s been guiding Florida anglers to redfish, tarpon, snook, seatrout, and more on the Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River Lagoon, and Banana River Lagoon as well as near-coastal Atlantic since the 1980s, guided at Alaska’s Goodnews River Lodge for seven years, and currently spends his summers guiding at the Lodge at Whale Pass in Alaska.

He's taught fishing classes at Brevard Community College, and was an instructor at the Andy Thornall Fly Fishing for Redfish School. The FFF has certified John as a Fly Casting Instructor. He gives Show and Tell Fishing Seminars on the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge two times a year.

John has been a three term president of the Indian River Guides Association, a two term president of the Backcountry Fly Fishing Association, and president of the Florida Outdoor Writers Association. He’s been selected as a Top Rated Guide.

His writing and photography has graced the pages of Fly Fisherman, Fly Fishing in Saltwaters, Fly Tyer, Fly Rod and Reel, American Angler, and many other magazines. His books include Redfish on the Fly and Flyrodding Florida Salt.

John’s sponsors include DOA Lures, Regal Fly Tying Vises and Dr. Slick Instruments for Anglers.

Seven boats, some paddle craft, others with motors, call his yard home. John’s always ready to talk fishing and can be reached via his website, www.spottedtail.com.
